A web app to make managing health and safety simple.
Health and safety can feel like a time-consuming afterthought, but it’s a critical part of getting Kiwi workers home safe to their whānau. Site Safe wanted to use mobile technology to build a safer construction industry by saving time, increasing compliance and helping people proactively manage onsite health and safety.
Making it easy to increase safety and save time
It’s effortless for people to understand what to do next through our clear, consistent visual design. Straightforward user flows make it simple to add and link staff, so people can see at a glance who has signed in where and when, issued equipment or recorded training. By improving the UX to make it easy to induct staff and contractors from their mobile (before they even get onsite), we supported increased productivity and reduced admin. With all the information people need stored in their mobile app, there's no time wasted looking around for the right piece of paper. People can use a simple action to report incidents, near misses, new hazards and risks on the spot meaning they can be dealt with promptly – before they cause accidents requiring downtime.
A Site Specific Safety Process (SSSP) is about as exciting as it sounds, but it’s potentially life-saving. SSSPs were previously multiple forms per site - sometimes more than 10 - that had to be filled out by multiple people. We moved these long, complex forms into the app. This means it’s quicker and easier to habitually and consistently monitor health and safety. When new hazards and risks are added to the SSSP, everyone is notified next time they’re on site, making it so much easier for everyone to get home safe. The SSSPs can be accessed anytime from anywhere – no more paper to keep track of.
We aligned the brand and visual design with the Site Safe website and other products, realising Site Safe’s product vision of a connected digital health and safety experience. We also designed and built the SiteSmart website, leveraging the design and development work we did on the Site Safe website, to feel cohesive across all the products. As the websites share the same code base, it gives Site Safe cost and time efficiencies when publishing content to the website, or making later design and development changes.
Our developers joined the existing SiteSmart development team, learning a completely new stack quickly. By augmenting their team, understanding their goals, processes, and technology, we streamlined development to optimise processes and speed up delivery. With a relentless focus on what had to be done for launch, we prioritised features that would deliver the most value to users. We built trust with stakeholders and the Board, showing regular progress, keeping us all focused on delivery, and helping to drive digital transformation.
The SiteSmart web app significantly reduces paperwork, creates smarter documentation, and enables people to share hazard and risk information much more easily. This increases workers’ safety on site, saves time and increases productivity. Business owners can rest easy knowing their workplace is compliant and their workers are safe.
