Helping improve health outcomes across Aotearoa

The Royal NZ College of GP’s aim is to improve health outcomes and reduce health inequities for all people in Aotearoa. One of the ways it does this is by maintaining education and quality standards for its members (GPs and rural hospital doctors) across the motu.

The goal

The Royal New Zealand College of GPs partnered with Octave to develop Te Whanake, a new digital product that delivers a professional development programme and enables members to stay on top of the developments and changing demands of the industry.

Making the complex simple

The Medical Council set the requirements for a GP’s professional development, and it’s fair to say, the requirements are complex. With GPs being time poor and under constant pressure, the challenge was to deliver complex requirements as a simple digital product and increase engagement. A key part of this process was having a group of highly engaged GPs as part of the design phase.

Technical stuff

Being a member based organisation of 5,500 medical professionals, the solution had to be delivered within a tight budget. Coupled with the complex requirements, a further challenge was the product had to integrate with a legacy member system. Leveraging our experience working with a number of member based organisations in Aotearoa, we landed on a target solution architecture and roadmap that identified the investment required to deliver Te Whanake, but also the likely investment in future years.

The result

Working in partnership with the College, Te Whanake launched in early October 2022. The feedback from GPs has been overwhelmingly positive, and the project was delivered on time and budget. As a second phase, a new website is scheduled to be launched in early December 2022.

"Working with Octave on the Te Whanake continuing professional development project was a pleasure. They quickly understood the aim of the College's CPD requirements and brought a fresh perspective to deliver complex requirements in a simple and user-friendly platform while making sure that our members were at the forefront of design choices and functionality.”
