Improving health and wellbeing equity in Aotearoa

MAS Foundation
+ Octave

The MAS Foundation is a philanthropic organisation established in 2019 which honours the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to improving health and wellbeing equity in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The problem

The MAS Foundation needed a website to showcase the incredible mahi they do in building relationships and partnering with ringa raupā (do-ers) that are working toward improving wellbeing in their communities. They also needed a way to tell the success stories of organisations they have worked with and the grants they’ve funded that have truly made a difference.

The brand evolution

With their digital presence only existing within mas.co.nz, it meant that their online brand was limited and could be enhanced simply. We took the existing brand gradients and shifted them to a brighter and lighter look and feel which instantly gave the site a more energetic and uplifting presence.

It was also important we incorporated more photography to bring a human touch to the MAS Foundation’s new website and shine a spotlight on the wonderful people and communities they are helping make change.

Introducing a cultural pattern

MAS commissioned SixOneNine to develop a cultural pattern, reflecting the Māori and Pacific ringa raupā they engage with, that could be used to enhance the brand. The idea of the final pattern is based on the early stages of making a kete. At the centre is the Rauru or main plait which represents the MAS Foundation. The whenu strips feeding into the plait represent the coming together of people, communities and organisations.

The pattern used on the website is the raranga pattern - Te Anga. The meaning of Te Anga is driving force, momentum, and to drive forward. It points in a ‘forward’ direction and symbolises leadership, direction, movement, and going forward together.

The result

A beautiful new website that tells the Foundation’s story whilst leveraging MAS’s multisite Wagtail CMS setup.
